Catalog, which is a user created panel of links to files, folders, URLs. Date modified is "the time when the contents of this file or folder last changed", and date created is "the time when this file or folder was first stored on this PC" (or when you made the copy, for a copy).Ĭustom Copy vs Native Implementation.png (43. XYplorer is a file manager for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11. I think it's important for Custom Copy to be consistent with the native implementation on these details in its default configuration because the way users reason about file dates is informed by the native implementation. Creation Date of the folder being moved or copied, there is XYplorer that does that. When you copy over a file on another volume, Custom Copy should carry over the date created from the replaced file Thats why TC would need to set the creation date after all copy. When you make a copy of a folder, Custom Copy should not update the modified date on the copy or its children. When you move a file or folder, Custom Copy should not change either date, even if you moved to another volume. In the question What are the best file managers for Windows XYplorer is ranked 1st while Directory Opus is ranked 2nd. For the rest, including operations with files and folders done within a parent folder as part of a merge of the parent: 34.95+ 640 113 When comparing Directory Opus vs XYplorer, the Slant community recommends XYplorer for most people. I didn't notice any problem with that case in Custom Copy, so I didn't include folder collisions in the table. ![]() For copying, this behavior would be fine IMHO, but for moving. Folder merges retain the date created from the receiving folder, but the date modified is updated when the contents change. Hello, when using custom copy (XYCopy), creation date is changed when moving a file/directory. Enabling preserve dates does not address this issue, because it creates a different set of inconsistencies with the way Windows does things. I'm running XYplorer 23.10 on Windows 11, and using only NTFS volumes, and I have secure overwrite enabled and preserve dates disabled. I've attached a table highlighting the differences I found. Will keep testing to see if I can get more info. After certain operations, Custom Copy updates the dates on files and folders when it shouldn't have, based on the behavior of the native implementation of copy and move in Windows. The drive where this happens is a 5.45 TB RAID 5 volume mounted on the W: drive letter as a dynamic disk (may be that's the culprit?). JPG and rename it again, it will then happen. 1JPG and then rename the file, it doesn't happen. It happens with a manual rename, Search and Replace not guilty. Windows: Copy files based on name, extension, size or date using Copywhiz. It only happens on XYlorer, not on Windows Explorer. Even better if there was a function to set all the files dates as per Exif.Ģ) I updated my XYplorer to the last version and I see the modified date changing on renaming but not on every case! I have done further testing and I am banging my head against the wall as I can't figure out what triggers it. Any chance of adding the same feature for modified dates? i.e. Renaming never changes the modified date of a file.ġ) That works like a charm, thanks. ![]() Any ideas how to do that?Īdmin wrote:1) If the modified date happens to be the exif date, then there is this: File / File Special / Set Created Date to ExifĢ) Really? Not here. So that the file name creates an automatic sort on the Modified date time. I would like to be able to rename these files as follows: So suppose I have 3 files as follows (for simplicity of the example I am only using dates and no times): I would like to preserve the modified date time when using the Search and Replace option, is this possible?ģ) The third issue I have is that I want to be able to rename all my files sorted modified date time. Fortunately the modified date time is preserved but here are my issues:ġ) How can I copy the modified date time of a file into the created date time of the file? Note that I have hundreds of images so a manual approach is not feasible.Ģ) The second issue I have is that the Search and Replace option is changing the modified date time of the file. This is not good as I want to be able to sort the pictures by date time. When the images get copied the created date time of the copied files is set as the current date time. Result: The 'creation date' is automatically changed to the creation date of the original file. Now I rename the copy of the file to the original name (removing the postfix). I move the original file to an archive folder. I am copying some photos from my iPhone to my PC. The copy is pasted with a postfix and its creation date shows the date/time of the paste.
